Eco Couture
Deborah works with the following sustainable, organic, and recycled fabrics to create bespoke eco-couture apparel and home decorative accessories.
Organic Fabrics:
Organic cotton and linen are grown from non genetically modified plants, without the use of synthetic chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides. By eliminating the use of toxic chemicals used in commercial cotton and linen production, the result is a healthier and cleaner product and environment.
Sustainable Fabrics:
Organic cotton /recycled polyester blend: Recycled polyester (often written rPET) is considered a green sustainable option in textiles because the energy used to create fiber out of recycled plastic bottles is less than what was needed to initially create the fiber. And it keeps bottles and other plastics out of the landfills.
Modal and Tencel are synthetic fabrics made from the natural cellulose found in wood pulp. Modal is made from beechwood, tencel from eucalyptus, and both are fully biodegradable. The fibers are produced via an advanced ‘closed loop’ solvent spinning process, with minimal impact on the environment and economical use of energy and water. The solvent used in the process is toxic but 99% is recovered and continually recycled.
Hemp is one of the earliest and fastest gowing domenticated plants known, and is a very environmentally friendly crop as it is naturally pest resistant and requires no herbicides to grow quickly. Hemp is similar to linen in its look and feel, and only water is needed to break down the “bast” fibers into usable fibers for fabric.
Upcycled/ Reincarnated Fabrics:
Sonic Fabric is an audible textile developed by artist Alyce Santoro and created from recycled recorded audio cassette tape.
Upcycled /reincarnated textiles are post-consumer textiles remade into new garments. Under the accordance of sustainability, the use of recycled clothing upholds the principle of the “Three R’s of the Environment”: Reduce, reuse, recycle. Our reincarnated fabrics include cashmere, wool, denim, leather, lace, saris, beaded fabrics, scarves, and anything else we find and love.
